According to USA Today, Johnny Galecki knew that Sara Gilbert was gay during their years on the show Roseanne. The two played a couple onscreen as well as off-screen. Gilbert recalls:
And I thought he was super cute and had a total crush on him and we started dating and he would come over and we would make out and then I would start to get depressed.
Gilbert felt that Galecki was beginning to take her sadness personally, so she finally told him she was gay. Apparently, Galecki was very understanding and "sweet" about it. Roseanne aired from 1988 to 1997 and Galecki never spoke a word of it to anyone. In addition, Gilbert says she was actually dating an older woman at the time and no one at the show knew except Galecki. What a trust-worthy guy, huh?
For a long time, Gilbert was scared about the truth of her sexuality coming to light, but now she thinks about it differently.
I want to live a true life. Beyond that, we do often say things like, 'It gets better' – and it does get better. I have an amazing life, but I want people to know that there can still be a struggle with it, and that's OK. There can be a part of you that doesn't want to feel different or feel scared. And that may be more important than any of it.
