1. Jennifer Smestad Is Using Her Tourette's Syndrome as Her Platform

Jennifer, 20, was diagnosed at age 10 with Tourette's, but was fortunately cured after living with the disease for five years according to Daily Mail. In competing for Miss America 2014, Jennifer Smestad hopes to raise awareness for neurological disorders, Tourette's Syndrome in particular.

2. Prior to Miss Arizona, Jennifer Was Miss City of Maricopa

On her Facebook page this summer, a detailed status described her role as Miss City of Maricopa and her transformation into a Miss America pageant contestant:
Miss City of Maricopa, Jennifer Smestad, is the new Miss Arizona! This has been a very exciting week for our local organization, her family, friends and Jennifer. Not only did Jennifer win the crown, but she also received several prestigious awards: Quality of Life winner, Children's Miracle Maker Award (from the Children's Miracle Network), preliminary talent award, and preliminary swimsuit award. We are extremely proud of her and the hard work that she put forth in preparing for Miss Arizona.
Being Miss City of Maricopa was the first local title that Jennifer won, and came in as a "rookie" to win the title of Miss Arizona. This can also be said about our local Miss City of Maricopa organization. This is only our second year having a local title holder compete for Miss Arizona. However, we believed in Jennifer and were extremely blessed to help Jennifer connect with a phenomenal pageant prep team including, Carrie Vargas (of Maricopa Community Theatre), Nicole Turner Flesner, (Miss Arizona 2007) and Jennifer Nagy (vocal coach at Chandler Gilbert Community College). We thank Jennifer for her service in our community, and know she will let her light shine at Miss America in Atlantic City on September 15, 2013!

Well, Jennifer is on strike for just a little while in terms of social media. She wants to fully absorb the whole pageant experience, so she is having her sister take over in posting updates for supporters and fans.
