Angry fans are petitioning for a cast change after author E.L. James announced on Twitter that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson will be playing Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, reports US Weekly.
The petition on Change.org calls for Hunnam and Johnson to be replaced with Matt Bommer and Alexis Bledel.
The petition, which has already reached over 35,000 signatures, states:
Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE And I read the whole trilogy and I can assure that Matt is the perfect actor for this movie and Alexis too. So please PLEASE, all of the GREYsessed and Bomerettes in the world NEED those actors. They always will be for us the Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. WE CAN DO ANYTHING GUYS, ANYTHING.
Bomer, 35, and Bledel, 31, were among those long-hoped to play the leading roles after the film adaptation of the erotic trilogy was announced. Fans even took to Youtube with fake trailers promoting the two stars.
"People definitely do have strong opinions about it," Bledel told ELLE at the time. "I guess when people really identify with a concept, they feel strongly about it."
Bomer even showed interest when asked about the casting rumors.
"It sounds amazing, and from what I hear, people are really into the story so I gotta check it out," he told Access Hollywood.
Despite the petition, Fifty Shades of Grey producers Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca are defending their decision to cast Hunnam and Johnson.
"There is a lot that goes into casting that isn't just looks," Brunetti said. "Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc," Brunetti explained on Twitter Monday. "So if your favorite wasn't cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective."
