Jason Pennington was shocked when he discovered a car filled with smoke on the side of the road, but was even more so when he realized the person he pulled from the vehicle was none other than Dick Van Dyke.
The 87-year-old actor narrowly escaped death Monday afternoon after his car caught fire on the Los Angeles freeway, reports TMZ. Pennington, the hero who rescued him, pulled up next to Van Dyke's Jaguar and saw him hunched over the wheel and struggling. Pennington said he opened the driver side door and pulled the actor out just as the car burst into flames.
Apparently, Van Dyke was unharmed after the accident and did not need medical attention. His wife, Arlene Van Dyke, picked him up shortly after.
“He was leaning over to get something out of the glove compartment when the car started smoking,” Van Dyke's rep said. “The car exploded after. He had a long day and is resting.”
Arlene posted a picture of the burnt out car on Vine.
The actor himself even joked about his totaled Jaguar on Twitter.
