The Westboro Baptist Church has found a new target: country singer Carrie Underwood. The controversial hate group plans to protest the Grammy-winning artist outside of her “Blown Away Tour” concert on May 1 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Montana.
On the religious group’s website, the Westboro Baptist Church claims the singer doesn’t follow the Christian faith because she supports same-sex marriage. The group adds that Carrie Underwood promotes “sin and shame” by performing onstage and “exposing her body to millions of people.”
Underwood revealed that she supports gay marriage in an interview with The Independent. She told the British paper that her stance stems from her Christian faith:
Above all, God wanted us to love others. It’s not about setting rules, or [saying] ‘everyone has to be like me’. No. We’re all different. That’s what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody.
The Sprint Center will also be the site of another protest by the group when Bon Jovi arrives on tour on April 13. The church also picketed Bon Jovi back in 2010 in Florida.
The Westboro Baptist Church, infamous for carrying signs with slogans like “God hates fags” and “Thank God for dead soldiers,” recently protested the funeral of film critic Roger Ebert, held Monday at the Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago.
