Beyonce and Jay-Z are ruffling political feathers in lieu of a recent fifth wedding anniversary trip to Cuba.
Travel to Cuba, a communist nation lying 90 miles south of Florida, is tightly restricted for American citizens under a long-standing trade embargo.
On Friday, two Republican congress members decided to investigate into the power couple's trip. The Independent reports:
...two Republican members of congress for Florida asked Adam Szubin, director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control, for "information regarding the type of license that Beyonce and Jay-Z received, for what purpose, and who approved such travel.
Many Cuban-Americans are deeply upset, viewing the trip as fuel for propaganda by the Castro regime for a more lenient take on American-Cuban relations.
Despite the clear prohibition against tourism in Cuba, numerous press reports described the couple’s trip as tourism, and the Castro regime touted it as such in its propaganda.
Beyonce's representatives have no comment on their trip.
If further inquiries into the trip are pursued, and the US finds that Beyonce and Jay-Z had no basis for a trip to Cuba, they could be fined.
