The 2013 People’s Choice Awards: Top 10 Facts You Need to Know

The People’s Choice Awards is an American awards shows that recognizes accomplished individuals in pop culture. The ceremony has been held since 1975 and is completely voted on by the general public. The 2013 award show aired Wednesday night giving awards to many celebrities, television shows and movies. Here’s what you need to know.

1. The Hunger Games Dominated


The Hunger Games” dominated at this year’s People Choice Awards with five trophies. The movie received favorite movie, action movie and movie franchise. “The Hunger Games” stars Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth received favorite on-screen chemistry while Lawrence took home trophies for favorite actress and favorite face of heroism. “The Hunger Games” follows Katniss Everdeen, played by Lawrence, as she fights for her life against 23 other young adults in a post-apocalyptic America.

“Thank you for loving movies as much as I do,” Lawrence said as she accepted her trophy.

2. Katy Perry was Runner Up


Katy Perry went home with the second most amount of awards including favorite female artist and favorite pop artist. She also was voted for favorite music video for “Part of Me ” and won the award for favorite music fan following.

3. “The Big Bang Theory” Won Favorite TV Show


The Big Bang Theory,” a sitcom that centers around two quirky physicists and their neighbor, an aspiring actress, took home favorite TV show. Other television winners included “Supernatural” for favorite sci-fi/fantasy, “Castle” for favorite crime drama, “The New Normal” for favorite comedy and “Grey’s Anatomy” for favorite drama

4. Taylor Swift Got Favorite Country Music Artist


Taylor Swift humbly took home the award for favorite country music artist.

“Thank you for caring about this album and for caring about me,” she said as she accepted her award.

5. Maroon 5 Received Favorite Band


Maroon 5 took home this year’s favorite band award, while Jason Mraz got favorite male artist, Nicki Minaj got favorite hip-hop artist and Rihanna got favotie R&B artist.

6. Jennifer Aniston Received Favorite Comedic Actress


Jennifer Aniston received an award for favorite comedic actress alongside comedic male counterpart, Adam Sandler.

“I love the people, I really do,” Aniston said, accepting her trophy.

7. “Twihards” Got Favorite Movie Following


Hey, at least “Twilight” didn’t totally eat “The Hunger Games'” dust, even though technically it didn’t even win an award-its fans did.”Twihards” is the embarrassing name for “Twilight” fanatics. Their crazy obsession with Bella and Edward won the movie an awards for favorite movie following.

8. The X Factor Received Favorite Competition TV Show


The X Factor” took home the award for favorite TV competition show while one of its judges, Demi Lovato received favorite celebrity judge. Sorry Simon.

9. Sandra Bullock was Presented with Favorite Humanitarian


Sandra became the first recipient to win the new category of favorite humanitarian. Bullock was recognized for her charity work including her commitment to Warren Easton High School in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

“I’m not at all being modest when I say I’m not doing anything compared to what they do on a daily basis,” Bullock said as she accepted her award.
