Congratulations internet content creators, you guys stepped up your game in 2012. J-Beibs was relatively quiet and Rebecca Black didn't do anything so I think it is safe to say that this year was a success!
So who reigned supreme in the Youtube-verse this past year? Check out our picks for the top 20 Youtube videos of 2012 (In no order):
1. "Gangnam Style" by PSY ( a billion views can't be wrong)
OK, lets just get this video out of the way. Al Gore invented the internet and PSY perfected it. Gangnam Style dominated the world this year making PSY the current king of the internet.
2. "Needing/Getting" by OK Go
Those silly silly geniuses at OKGO were up to their old shenanigans again in 2012. Needing/Getting is a full song played by instruments attached to a car. Watch and be msytified!
3. 9 year old lady football star, Sam Gordon
Sam Gordon looks like a cast member of iCarly but runs like Adrian Peterson. Check out Sam as she DOMINATES her male counterparts on the grid iron. YOU GO GURL!
4. TNT's Dramatic Surprise on a Quiet Square
Part commercial. Part Michael Bay movie. I imagine this is how Jason Statham starts his morning every day.
5. 5 Peeps 1 Guitar
Watch the video. We SWEAR it is not porn.
6. Hot Pocket Commercial Featuring Snoop Dog and Andy Milonakis
This is probably my favorite thing on the internet. "Pocket Like It's Hot" is a truly amazing song with a truly amazing message. Maybe the world would be a little bit more pleasant if we all would "Pocket Like It's Hot" every once in a while.
7. Old Spice/Bounty Commercial
Another commercial thrill ride from the creative team at Old Spice. The body wash/deoderant giant is known for their absurd viral ad content. This video might just be their most viraliest/adiest/contentiest piece of viral ad content they have produced yet.
8. "It's Thanksgiving" by Nicole Westbrook
If Rebecca Black had a younger and more patriotic sister, it would be Nicole Westbrook. Nicole's "It's Thanksgiving" is like Youtube's gift to America.
There was some debate as to whether Kony2012 should end up on the list because of all the controversy surrounding the video. Since its released, Invisible Children (the group that made the video) has been the subject of harsh criticism, the owner of the video was arrested for public indecency and claims that Kony was killed YEARS ago began to dominate the conversation surrounding the Kony2012 campaign. Nonetheless, Kony 2012 showed how the viral nature of the internet can be used for a good cause.
10. Felix Baumgarten's Freefall
Felix Baumgarten wins the 2012 "Badass Award". You too can win this award when you basejump from outside of the atmosphere.
11. "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen
If being oddly addicted to "Call Me Maybe" makes me a teenage girl, then throw me some jeggings and call me Miranda Cosgrove. Carly Rae Jepsen's musical jaunt through pop-ville, USA gave us one of the most memorable summer anthems in history.
12. Facebook Parenting for Troubled Teen
I can't decide if this is a video of a totally awesome parent who is laying down the law OR one of the scariest effing things I have ever seen. Either way, people in the south are weird.
13. "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye
The first time you hear this song you will hate it. The second time you hear this song you will hate it. The third time you heard this song you will be freakishly in love with it. "Somebody That I Used to Know" has garnered 357 million views thus far, I'm willing to bet that at least 150 million of those views are people trying to figure out if they like the song or not.
14. "Ain't Nobody Got Time For That"
No truer words have ever been spoken.
15. Brazilian Elevator Prank
Brazilians are sick individuals.... super hot but insanely sick. This elevator prank is the most terrifying thing I have ever seen.
16. "Booty Pop" by Albert
Full disclosure, watching this video will make you lose all faith you have in humanity.
17. Why You Asking All Them Questions #FCHW
I'm going to be honest, I do not understand why this video is as viral as it is. That being said, 40+ million people adamantly disagree with me. Spoken Reason's Youtube account has become an internet sensation meaning that we can expect to see more of these videos in 2013, *Forces smile* which I'm totally excited for.
18. "Dubstep Violin" by Lindsey Stirling
Hot chick with bad ass violin skillz? Sign me up! Lindsey Stirling's Youtube channel is like porn for your ears... and also your eyes.
19. Epic Rap Battles
Epic Rap Battles wins the award for comedy Youtube channel of the year in my book. ERB features 2 seasons of verbal smackdowns with some of history's biggest names. Abe Lincoln vs. Chuck Norris? CHECK! Dr. Seuss vs. Shakespeare? CHECK! Hitler vs. Darth Vader? CHECK! Epic Rap Battles is like a history class but totally awesome.
20. Michelle Jenneke
annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd, this was the best thing to happen in 2012.
