Floyd Mayweather’s Questionable Win

Floyd Mayweather

So I caught up with the Mayweather / Marquez fight and the surrounding controversy today. If you're not in the loop, Mayweather didn't make weight for the contest, coming to the weigh-in at two pounds heavier than the Welterweight limit of 144 pounds. Those two pounds cost the boxer an estimated $600,000, but they may have won him the fight - Mayweather already had a power advantage over Marquez, and not burning down completely to make weight may have allowed him to bulk up for fight night faster - when the two men met in the ring, it seemed like Floyd had a good 10 pounds on his opponent. And he used them, picking apart the outmatched Marquez to a unanimous decision on points. The assembled crowd lustily booed the victor, and for good reason - there's no sport in watching a boxing match in which one competitor has five inches of reach and ten pounds on the other. And even more unpleasantness happened after the bell, as Mayweather's victory celebration was boorishly interrupted by Shane Mosley and Bernard Hopkins, agitating to be Mayweather's next opponent. Seriously, that's some pro-wrestling lack of class there.
