Caster Semenya: He’s A She? She’s A He?

posted August 20, 2009 by

After winning the women's world 800 meter title, South African, Caster Semenya is now scheduled for a gender verification test. I know what you're thinking: "Don't you mean drug testing?" No, dear reader. You read correctly.

But what is gender testing? Allow me to tell you.

Stella Walsh, aka Stanislawa Walasiewicz, won the women's 100 meter race at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1932. Later, she was shot and killed and during the autopsy was discovered to have male genitalia. What, what?! Thus, gender testing was born.

But gender testing is not when sports officials think a dude is pulling a Mrs. Doubtfire and posing as a chick. It's when they think that the athlete unknowingly possesses both male and female chromosomes.

That's gotta feel great after a victory: "Congratulations! You just won the 800 meter race! ...now let's look for some Y chromosomes."
